GCE/International A-Level

The UK A-Level (GCE A-Level) is a two-year high school program in the UK, comparable to Hong Kong’s former Advanced Level Examination system (Form 6 and Form 7).

Students typically take 3-4 subjects, focusing on understanding and applying academic knowledge. In Hong Kong, schools may offer International A-Level (IAL), which is recognized for university admissions but differs from GCE A-level in assessment scope and question types.

Both IAL and GCE A-level have different exam boards with slight variations. Some boards, like Edexcel IAL and WJEC GCE A level, use a Modular system where Year 12 students take AS level exams covering about half of the curriculum, contributing to their overall score. This means Modular A level students face public examinations one year earlier. Moreover, due to its simpler content compared to Hong Kong’s DSE (Diploma of Secondary Education), many top DSE students are increasingly self-studying for A levels (usually Edexcel IAL) starting from Form 4 or Form 5 to improve their university admission prospects.

IBDP (TOK, EE)

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP) is a two-year course that is generally more recognized in the United States compared to A-Level qualifications. This makes it a popular choice among students aiming to attend universities in the U.S. Additionally, the IB DP covers a wider range of subjects than A-Level, which requires students studying IBDP to have higher reading and writing skills.

The curriculum consists of six subject groups (Mother Language, Foreign Language, Social Studies, Sciences, Mathematics and Computer Science, and Arts), along with Theory of Knowledge (TOK), an Extended Essay (EE), and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS).

In terms of grading, academic subjects are scored from 1 to 7 points; mandatory components such as TOK and the Extended Essay can earn up to 3 additional points. Therefore, the maximum score for IB DP is 45 points while the passing score is 24 points. Furthermore, parents should be aware that students must complete CAS because those who do not fulfill this requirement will not be awarded the IB DP certificate.

GCSE/IGCSE

The GCSE course lasts two years, mainly allowing students to have relative knowledge in different categories of subjects in Year 10 and Year 11, and to have a clear understanding of their interests and strengths in different subjects before entering the British Higher Education A-Level.

Generally speaking, students will take 8 to 10 courses, which are composed of five compulsory courses and three to four elective courses. In terms of grading standards, the passing standard of the British GCSE is 9-4 (equivalent to “A*-C” grade),
